Difference between 304 and 304L stainless steel

304 and 304L stainless steel are both part of the austenitic family of stainless steels, which are known for their excellent corrosion resistance and formability. The primary difference between the two lies in their carbon content and how that affects their properties:

1. Carbon Content:
– 304 Stainless Steel: Contains a maximum of 0.08% carbon.
– 304L Stainless Steel: Contains a maximum of 0.03% carbon. The “L” stands for “low carbon.”

2. Sensitization and Intergranular Corrosion:
– 304 Stainless Steel: The higher carbon content in 304 makes it more susceptible to sensitization when exposed to temperatures between 425°C and 815°C (797°F and 1499°F). Sensitization leads to the formation of chromium carbides at the grain boundaries, which can result in intergranular corrosion.
– 304L Stainless Steel: The lower carbon content in 304L significantly reduces the risk of sensitization and intergranular corrosion, making it more suitable for welding and high-temperature applications where sensitization is a concern.

3. Strength:
– 304 Stainless Steel: Generally has slightly higher strength due to its higher carbon content.
– 304L Stainless Steel: Slightly lower strength compared to 304, but the difference is usually minimal and often not significant for most applications.

4. Applications:
– 304 Stainless Steel: Commonly used in a wide range of applications, including kitchen equipment, chemical containers, and industrial equipment where welding is not extensive.
– 304L Stainless Steel: Preferred for applications involving heavy welding or high-temperature exposure, such as in the fabrication of large tanks, heat exchangers, and piping systems.

5. Weldability:
– 304 Stainless Steel: Can be welded, but post-weld annealing may be required to restore corrosion resistance if the material has been sensitized.
– 304L Stainless Steel: Better suited for welding without the need for post-weld annealing, thanks to its lower carbon content.

In summary, the choice between 304 and 304L stainless steel depends on the specific requirements of the application, particularly concerning welding and exposure to high temperatures. For most general purposes, 304 is sufficient, but for welding-intensive applications or those involving high temperatures, 304L is often the better choice.
