ASTM A249 and ASTM A269 both appear on stainless steel tube enquiries, but they do not describe the same purchasing requirement. The application and the edition of the specification should be chosen before asking a supplier to price the tube.

These descriptions follow the published ASTM A249/A249M scope and ASTM A269/A269M scope. They are not a substitute for the purchased standard or the equipment design code. A tube described as “heat-exchanger tube” is not automatically compliant with A249; the order and inspection records must identify the actual requirements.

- State the equipment duty, operating medium and applicable design specification.
- Name A249/A249M or A269/A269M and the required edition; do not write both without defining why.
- Provide material grade, outside diameter, wall thickness, length, tolerances and quantity.
- Specify seamless or welded construction where relevant, plus any heat treatment or surface condition required by the project.
- Define required inspection, acceptance criteria and material documents on the purchase order.
