Description of ASTM A269 Stainless Steel Tube

ASTM A269 is a standard specification established by ASTM International that covers seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubes intended for general corrosive service and for high-temperature or low-temperature applications. It is a fundamental and widely used specification across numerous industries.

The defining characteristic of A269 tubes is their suitability for “general service.” This means they are the standard choice for a vast range of applications where corrosion resistance, pressure integrity, and cleanliness are required, but where the extreme conditions of more specialized standards (like A213 for high-pressure boilers) are not necessary.

Common Applications

The applications for A269 tubing are extensive due to its versatility.

Heat Exchangers and Condensers: Used for the tubes that carry fluid inside a shell-and-tube heat exchanger.

Instrumentation and Process Lines: Transporting gases, liquids, and semi-fluids within a processing plant.

Food, Beverage, and Pharmaceutical Processing: Its smooth surface, cleanability, and corrosion resistance make it ideal for hygienic applications. In these industries, it is often supplied with electropolished (EP) or mechanically polished finishes.

Chemical and Petrochemical Industry: For general corrosive service in piping systems and equipment.

Hydraulic and Pneumatic Lines: Used for transmitting fluids and gases under pressure.

Architectural and Decorative Uses: When a specific structural standard is not required.
