Sanitary tube buyers often receive drawings that mention ASTM A270, EN 10357, DIN 11850, or 3-A. These references are related to hygienic tubing, but a standard name alone does not prove that a tube will fit an existing valve, ferrule, fitting, or welded connection. This guide explains what to compare before requesting a quotation. It is a selection checklist, not a substitute for the applicable standard or an approved engineering drawing.
What does each reference cover?
| Reference | Use in a purchasing specification | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM A270/A270M | A sanitary tubing product specification covering specified stainless steel tube grades and manufacturing routes. | Edition, grade, outside diameter, wall thickness, finish, tests, and supplementary requirements. |
| EN 10357 | A European specification for longitudinally welded stainless steel tubes used in food and chemical industry applications. | Edition, dimensional series, material, surface condition, and the matching connection drawing. |
| DIN 11850 | A designation that may still appear on existing German-system drawings and purchasing lists. DIN EN 10357 replaced DIN 11850:2009-06. | Which historical edition or dimensional series the project means; do not assume a replacement tube is dimensionally interchangeable. |
| 3-A 33-03 | A separate sanitary standard for metal tubing itself. | Whether the project requires this standard, and what evidence or authorization is being requested. It does not certify a complete fabricated system by itself. |
Consult the official ASTM A270/A270M listing, DIN EN 10357 listing, DIN replacement note, and 3-A metal tubing standard for the scope and current publication information. Full dimensional and acceptance requirements should be checked in the purchased standard and contract documents.
Why nominal size is not enough to confirm fit
A familiar nominal size, such as an inch or DN designation, is not a complete connection specification. Before substituting one tube or fitting system for another, compare the actual outside diameter, wall thickness, tolerance, fitting bore, ferrule or weld-end geometry, and the permitted joining procedure on the approved drawings. Also check whether the internal step, drainability, and cleanability are acceptable for the process. If any dimension or requirement is missing, request clarification rather than assuming compatibility from the standard label.
Sanitary tube compatibility checklist
- Identify the governing document. State the product standard, edition, dimensional series, project drawing revision, and any additional hygienic requirement.
- Match physical dimensions. Provide outside diameter, nominal or minimum wall thickness as applicable, length, tolerances, and fitting or valve connection details.
- Select the material for the service. Specify the grade and review the process fluid, cleaning chemicals, temperature, fabrication, and corrosion conditions.
- Define the surface requirement. State the required internal and external condition, roughness limit if applicable, measurement location, and whether polishing or electropolishing is specified.
- Define joining and inspection. Identify welding or clamp connections, end preparation, required tests, acceptance criteria, and any witness points.
- Request the necessary records. List material traceability, inspection results, and documentation required by the purchase order; do not assume that one certificate covers every aspect of the installed system.
Which Yaolong product page should you use?
For a standard-specific tube enquiry, start with the ASTM A270 sanitary tube, EN 10357 tube, or DIN 11850 tube page. For a wider product overview, see sanitary tubing. If your system has an application-specific hygienic or bioprocess requirement, review the hygienic process tubing or ASME BPE tube page without treating these as interchangeable standards.
Questions buyers commonly ask
Can I replace a DIN 11850 tube with an EN 10357 tube?
Only after checking the specified editions, actual dimensions, material, finish, and mating connection. The fact that EN 10357 replaced DIN 11850 as a published standard does not, by itself, confirm fit in an existing line.
Does an ASTM A270 tube automatically make a system 3-A compliant?
No. ASTM A270 is a tube product specification. The 3-A metal tubing standard addresses the tube itself, while fittings, equipment, installation, and any authorization need separate review against the applicable requirements.
What should I send for a reliable quotation?
Send the drawing or purchasing specification, standard and edition, grade, outside diameter, wall thickness, quantity, surface finish, end connection, inspection and documentation needs, and destination through our request-a-quote page. If a dimension or requirement is still undecided, mark it for technical review.
