Stainless Steel Tube RFQ Checklist: What to Send for an Accurate Quote

A request for “316L stainless steel tube” leaves too many decisions open. A useful RFQ identifies the product, intended application and acceptance requirements so a supplier can check feasibility and quote the same specification you need to purchase.

Eight fields to include

  1. Application and medium: tell the supplier whether this is sanitary transfer, heat exchange, industrial piping, drinking water or liquid cooling, and identify any relevant service conditions.
  2. Product standard and edition: for example ASTM A270, ASTM A249, ASTM A269 or ASTM A312. A dimensional standard may also be required.
  3. Grade: state the exact grade or UNS/EN designation, rather than “food grade” alone.
  4. Dimensions: outside diameter or NPS, nominal wall or schedule, length, tolerances and end preparation.
  5. Manufacturing route and finish: where relevant, specify seamless/welded, internal and external finish, Ra units and any polishing or electropolishing requirement.
  6. Testing and acceptance: list project-required checks and the standard or method for acceptance; avoid assuming that one generic test covers every defect.
  7. Documents: identify the material certificate, heat traceability and inspection records you require, subject to availability and agreement.
  8. Commercial information: quantity, destination, requested packaging, delivery window and drawing revision.

Choose the right product route

Start at the sanitary tubing range for hygienic applications, heat-exchanger tubing for heat-transfer service, industrial pipe for piping, or liquid-cooling tube for data-center projects. Those product pages own the commercial product terms; this checklist explains how to prepare a complete enquiry.

Common RFQ mistakes

Do not mix tube outside diameter with pipe NPS, omit roughness units, treat a grade as a complete specification, or assume a certificate or test is included without stating it. If a standard, edition or finish is uncertain, mark it as a question for technical review rather than guessing.
