ASTM A312 TP304L Stainless Steel Pipe
ASTM A312 TP304L stainless steel pipe is the low-carbon TP304L grade produced to ASTM A312 requirements. It is commonly specified for welded process piping when limiting carbon-related sensitization is important. Suitability still depends on the process medium, temperature, pressure, fabrication procedure, cleaning conditions, and governing piping code.
When TP304L May Be Specified
- Welded process and utility piping in service compatible with 304L.
- Fabricated piping where post-weld corrosion performance is a design consideration.
- Water-treatment, food-processing utility, chemical-transfer, and general industrial systems when approved by the project engineer.
TP304L is not universally suitable for chloride-rich, strongly reducing, or otherwise aggressive chemical environments. The service conditions should be reviewed before the grade is selected.

What is the difference between TP304 and TP304L?
TP304L has a lower maximum carbon limit. They are distinct grades, so the required designation must appear in the purchase specification.
Does TP304L automatically meet every pressure-piping code?
No. ASTM A312 is a product specification. The piping design code, allowable stresses, dimensions, joining requirements, and project acceptance criteria must also be identified.
