ASTM A312 TP316 Stainless Steel Pipe

ASTM A312 TP316 stainless steel pipe combines ASTM A312 manufacturing and test requirements with the molybdenum-bearing TP316 grade. It may be selected for process piping where the specified environment requires different corrosion performance from TP304. Grade suitability depends on the complete chemistry, chloride level, temperature, pressure, flow, fabrication, and cleaning conditions.

Typical TP316 Piping Applications

  • Chemical and process piping for fluids confirmed as compatible with TP316.
  • Industrial water, heat-transfer, and utility systems with project-specific corrosion review.
  • Fabricated equipment connections and piping assemblies produced to the applicable code and drawing.

The presence of molybdenum does not make TP316 resistant to every chloride or chemical environment. Crevice geometry, deposits, shutdown conditions, and temperature can materially change performance.

Specify TP316 for Quotation

Provide the ASTM A312 edition, seamless or welded construction, NPS or outside diameter, schedule or wall thickness, length, quantity, end preparation, heat treatment, surface condition, testing, inspection, and documentation. Include the design code and any supplementary requirements that apply to the project.

Compare ASTM A312 TP316L pipe, review 316 stainless steel properties, or return to the ASTM A312 specification page.

ASTM A312 TP316 FAQ

Is TP316 suitable for seawater?

Do not assume suitability from the grade name alone. Chloride concentration, temperature, oxygen, velocity, crevices, deposits, and maintenance conditions must be evaluated by the project engineer.

How is TP316 different from TP316L?

TP316L has a lower maximum carbon limit. Welding, heat exposure, mechanical requirements, and the purchase specification help determine which grade is appropriate.

What should be included in the inspection plan?

Identify material traceability, dimensional checks, visual examination, pressure testing, specified NDT, acceptance criteria, and documentation. See our quality testing information.
