ISO 9001:2015 – Quality Management System (QMS)
What it is: An internationally recognized standard for Quality Management Systems (QMS). It’s a framework for ensuring an organization can consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements.
Key Focus: It is based on a process approach and risk-based thinking. It emphasizes customer satisfaction, continuous improvement, and evidence-based decision making.
Certification: Organizations are certified by an external accreditation body against this standard. It’s a voluntary standard that demonstrates a commitment to quality.
In a nutshell: ISO 9001:2015 defines how a company manages its processes to ensure quality.
PED 2014/68/EU – Pressure Equipment Directive
What it is: A legal directive from the European Union. It applies to the design, manufacturing, and conformity assessment of pressure equipment (vessels, piping, safety accessories, etc.) with a maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 bar.
Key Focus: Safety. Its primary objective is to ensure pressure equipment placed on the EU market is safe, protecting people, domestic animals, and property.
Certification: It is a legal requirement for selling applicable equipment in the EU and EEA. It is not a quality standard but a safety directive. Compliance is demonstrated through a “Conformity Assessment Procedure” which can involve notified bodies (like TÜV, Lloyd’s Register, etc.). This often results in a CE marking on the product.
In a nutshell: The PED defines what safety requirements the final product must meet to be legally sold in Europe.
AD 2000-Merkblatt W0 – Technical Standard
What it is: A well-known and respected German technical standard, specifically for pressure vessels. The “AD 2000” series are codes of practice published by the German Association for Pressure Vessels (Verband der Technischen Überwachungs-Vereine e.V.).
Key Focus: It provides detailed, practical rules for the design, materials, fabrication, and testing of pressure vessels. It is a harmonized standard under the PED, meaning that following AD 2000 provides a “presumption of conformity” with the essential safety requirements of the PED.
Certification: It is not a certificate itself. A pressure vessel can be designed and manufactured according to the rules of AD 2000-W0. A notified body would then verify this compliance as part of the PED conformity assessment.
In a nutshell: AD 2000-W0 provides the specific technical rules and methods for how to design and build a pressure vessel to be safe (and thus PED compliant).
