Data Center Liquid Cooling Tube: Specification and Leak-Test Checklist

Liquid-cooling tube purchases start with the system drawing, not a generic claim that stainless steel is suitable for every coolant. Tube material, connections and the acceptance test should be matched to the actual fluid circuit and engineering specification.

Define the service conditions

  1. Identify the coolant, concentration, water chemistry if relevant, temperature range and operating conditions provided by the system designer.
  2. Name the material standard and grade; include the required edition and any project-specific restrictions.
  3. State outside diameter, wall thickness, length, tolerances, bend or straight-length requirements and connection details.
  4. Specify cleanliness, end protection and packaging requirements if they affect installation or commissioning.
  5. Define the leak or pressure test method, test medium, acceptance criterion and records. Do not substitute a factory tube test for validation of the assembled system.
  6. List material identification, heat traceability and inspection documents requested with the order.

Tube test versus completed system test

A production tube may be tested under its material specification, while a manifold or installed loop can require a different commissioning test. The project engineer should define both scopes, including pressure, duration and acceptance. Our guides to hydrostatic testing and pneumatic testing explain the methods; neither article establishes a pressure rating for a specific product.

Choose the relevant product

Start with data-center liquid-cooling tube for the commercial product, then compare ASTM A249 or ASTM A269 only if the project specification calls for them. The A249 versus A269 guide outlines their different scopes.

FAQ

Is a published tube test sufficient for a cooling loop?

No. System joints, fittings and commissioning are separate from the tube’s manufacturing test.

What is needed for a quotation?

Send the latest drawing, fluid and operating conditions, material specification, quantity, end connection and testing/documentation requirements. Ask for a project-specific quotation.
